LNHBA Committees & Councils: Building Performance Council

The national Green Building movement has made us all aware of the importance of being sensitive to the environment, both the natural environment outdoors, and the interior environment of the buildings we live in.  A number of programs (i.e. LEED, Green Building Standard, EarthCraft, Passivhaus, Living Building Challenge, etc.) provide overall strategies as to what to implement in building a “green” building.  Think of their strategies as a set of tools in your tool belt.  Now it is time to learn how best to use these tools to efficiently and economically create the “green” building product.  This is where Building Science and Building Performance strategies come into play.  These two building fields provide the why and how of what we should be doing to create a “green” building.  Building Science is primarily research –oriented, whereas, Building Performance is field-oriented.  For that reason Building Performance is the next natural step to help builders and designers become educated with the most effective building techniques.  With this mindset, the LNHBA board of directors has granted me permission to change the name of the Green Building Council to the Building Performance Council.  The focus of the Building Performance Council will be to educate our council members on how to implement effective practices into whatever they’re building.  It does not matter that your goal is to attain a certain program certification, or not.  It matters that builders and designers create a better building product that provides many benefits to their client, and sensitivity to the environments we live in, both inside and out.

If you have any questions about the Building Performance Council, please contact Council Chair, Steve Schreiner at steve@schreiner-design.com .

LNHBA is excited to announce a new program for Building Performance Council (BPC) members that includes fresh and new educational opportunities to support their efforts to build green.  The new program, developed in partnership with NC Building Performance Association, offers green builders access to e-newsletters, educational webinars, in-person workshops with NCBPA’s network of trainers, local networking events, purchase discounts, online discussion forums and more to educate, inform and provide new opportunities to build green.

For a $50 annual fee, BPC members who choose to participate in the program will receive access to a wealth of information and resources designed specifically to support green builders in today’s market.  Topics for e-newsletters, events and webinars will include:

  • Construction Techniques & Strategies

  • Marketing Best Practices

  • Policies and code requirements

  • Support for certification and incentive programs

  • And much more

In addition to the digital and online information provided, LNHBA will work closely with NCBPA to deliver in-person events in our area that provide networking, educational and social opportunities that promote green building and form new partnerships.

To participate in the program, simply email your contact information to Beth White at the LNHBA’s office, and mail a $50 check made out to the LNHBA identifying the BPC on the memo line.
